INTUITION and REASONING in SURFBOARD DESIGN

  INTUITION Acquiring knowledge without conscious reasoning.

INTUITIVE DESIGN Using knowledge, imagination, or general understanding without the conscious use of reasoning to solve a problem.

REASONING Acquiring knowledge by drawing conclusions from known or assumed facts. Reasoning consciously applies logic and draws conclusions from new or existing information.

INDUCTIVE DESIGN The inductive approach begins with a set of empirical observations, seeking patterns in those observations, then theorizing about those patterns, using specific facts, data, and circumstances to reach a general conclusion. Gather and study data - look for patterns - develop theories.

DEDUCTIVE DESIGN The deductive approach begins with a theory, developing hypotheses from that theory, and then collecting and analyzing data to test those hypotheses, hypothosizing and theorizing from facts, existing data, and general principles, then using logic and reasoning to test and validate theories. Theorize - analyze - draw conclusions.

COMPLIMENTARY DESIGN Inductive and deductive approaches to surfboard design can be utilized together for an inclusive and conscious approach to design. The inductive approach begins with a set of empirical observations, seeking patterns in those observations, then theorizing about those patterns. The deductive approach begins with a theory, developing hypotheses from that theory, then collecting and analyzing data to test those hypotheses.

THE SURFBOARD DESIGN PROCESS begins with identifying the surfers' goals and requirements and their surfing venues - the waves and conditions they surf. The surfers and the waves they ride identify overall design class and the variables within that class of designs - dimensions, rockers, profiles and foils, bottom contours, deck contours, outlines, rails, fins, and all the variables that create a suitable surfboard for the surfer. Testing the perfromance of these design arrangements through surfing and observation and bringing new theories and hypothesis into the process based on these observations and any new ideas that may develop, surfers, shapers, and surfboard designers use inductive, deductive, and complimentary design principles.
